Dundee Alternative Degree Show

As a group of 4th year Fine Art graduates of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee, we decided to curate an exhibition in Glasgow that featured a cross section of Dundee’s May 2005 Degree Show.
Our degree show is a month earlier than the other Scottish art colleges and so one of our aims for the project was to place work from Dundee amongst the collective hype that surrounds the Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow shows. This provided the public with an opportunity to experience a representation of the exciting work that is going on in Dundee, as well as offering the students of DOJ the opportunity to exhibit to this wider audience during this prime time.
The exhibition showed in Templeton Carpet Factory from June 24th to July 1st. The building’s current renovation to flats gave us the opportunity to exhibit in this amazing and historic building.
What happened?
The Dundee Alternative Degree Show began with a very well-attended opening night on Friday 24 June and lasted until Friday 1 July at 6pm. Many visitors found us through our publicity, which included mailshots, The List and Metro. Others were passers-by, following the intriguing set of arrows and fabric posters along the side of the Templeton Carpet Factory.
Thanks to the interest engendered by the Dundee Alternative Degree Show exhibition, there is now a strong possibility that this wonderful space will be retained as a gallery when the building is renovated.
